Who We Are
BEHC Supporting Burundi's Vulnerable Elderly
About us
Burundi Elderly Home Care (BEHC) is a humanitarian, non-profit, and non-political organization dedicated to improving the lives of elderly people across Burundi. Founded in 2020 and officially licensed in 2025, BEHC was established in response to the growing challenges faced by older persons, many of whom live in poverty, isolation, disability, and limited access to healthcare and social support. Based in Bujumbura, Burundi, BEHC works to ensure that elderly men and women can age with dignity, respect, protection, and hope. We believe that every older person deserves to be valued for their lifelong contributions to society and should never be left behind because of age, illness, or economic hardship.
Our Story
Our Current Approach: Reaching Elders Where They Live
One of our long-term aspirations is to establish a dedicated elderly care home where vulnerable older persons can receive comprehensive support, companionship, healthcare referrals, and protection in a safe and dignified environment.
However, as a young organization operating in a resource-constrained environment, we currently do not own or operate a residential elderly care facility. Financial limitations have made it impossible to establish and maintain such a center at this stage.
Rather than waiting for ideal conditions, we chose to act.
Today, BEHC focuses primarily on community outreach programs that bring support directly to elderly people in their homes and communities. Through outreach visits, we identify vulnerable elderly individuals, listen to their concerns, assess their needs, provide emotional support, and advocate on their behalf.
This outreach model allows us to reach elderly people who might otherwise remain invisible to society. It also enables us to understand firsthand the realities they face and to develop future interventions based on their actual needs.
A Growing Movement for Elderly Dignity
BEHC is more than an organization—it is a growing movement dedicated to restoring respect, inclusion, and dignity for older persons in Burundi.
Our work is driven by the belief that elderly people are not a burden to society; they are its foundation. They are parents, grandparents, teachers, farmers, workers, leaders, and custodians of history whose contributions deserve recognition and appreciation.
Every outreach visit, every conversation, and every act of support reinforces our conviction that meaningful change is possible when communities come together to care for their elders.
Looking Toward the Future
Our vision extends beyond immediate assistance. We aspire to build sustainable programs that address the social, health, psychological, and economic needs of elderly people throughout Burundi.
Future goals include establishing a dedicated elderly care center, expanding community outreach services, improving access to mobility support and healthcare, strengthening emergency response systems, promoting elderly rights, and fostering research and international collaboration on aging.
Achieving these goals will require partnerships, innovation, and collective action.
As Burundi's population continues to age, the need for effective elderly care and support becomes increasingly urgent. BEHC welcomes collaboration with donors, researchers, universities, healthcare institutions, foundations, volunteers, and development partners who share our commitment to improving the lives of older persons. Together, we can create a future where every elderly person is valued, respected, protected, and empowered to live with dignity. Because every elder deserves not only to live longer—but to live better.
